TMZ has learned Nigel Lythgoe will return to “American Idol” next season as the executive producer
… marking one of the biggest TV “I told you so!” moments in decades.
Lythgoe left “American Idol” in 2008 as execs were squabbling over how to guide the show. Since his departure, the show has kinda sucked. The fact that execs ate a big fat crow and asked him back is pretty amazing.
Nigel gave an unwitting hint of his return on this week’s “So You Think You Can Dance?” when he slipped and told a contestant he was one of the best ever on “American Idol.”
All I can say, is “Good For You, Nigel.” I so totally agree that the show has totally sucked without Nigel. If they had never booted Nigel, we may have still had Simon, Paula an Randy.
I agree that season 9 totally sucked, but season 8 also took place after Lythgoe’s departure, and it was my all time favorite season. Even so, I think the show is far better off with him than without him. Now if they can only get the selections of the new judges right. I’ve enjoyed this show sio much over the years and would be deeply disappointed if it doesn’t continue to evolve and keep up with the changes in the entertainment industry and audience preferences.
