As it enters its 10th season, American Idol is both in serious need of — and in a unique position to make — serious renovations. After all, the show must replace, at the very least, its most visible, quotable judge and its longtime music director.
Entertainment Weekly‘s Michael Slezak recently offer 15 ways to fix American Idol. My favorites from Michael’s list, ones I think would actually help give us better contestants and winners, as well as a more watchable show, include casting a more diverse group of semifinalists, creating a banned songs list, expanding the weekly list of pre-cleared songs, acknowledging music written and recorded after 1990 and — believe it or not — rebooting the judges’ panel but (gulp!) keeping Kara DioGuardi.
I don’t, however, think letting the contestants perform material they’ve written themselves is a good idea (although I could see putting the top two finalists in a room with a couple of pros and seeing what they could come up with together).
