American Idol Top 4 – Songs From the Cinema – SONG LIST

May 6th, 2010 by Joes Place Leave a reply »

Here’s the list of the 34 “Songs From the Cinema” that out top 4 had to choose from.  Have a look and let me – and the contestants – know what they should sing.  I do have o warn you – it’s a cheesefest.

First off, no one better sing Summertime or Over the Rainbow…Right?  It is always a death sentence if a current contestant sings a song that a previous contest had their “moment” with.  I would also suggest staying away from the Jennifer Hudson song, to avoid the comparison .

Here’s what I would suggest:

Lee:  Iris or Kiss From a Rose

Crystal: Mrs. Robinson 0r Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In

Casey: I’m Alright or Don’t You Forget bout Me

Mike:  Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? or Take My Breath Away

SONG LIST:

(Everything I Do) I Do It for You – Bryan Adams

(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life – Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes

A Whole New World  Brad Kane & Lea Salonga

Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In – The 5th Dimension

Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do) –   Christopher Cross

Can’t Fight the Moonlight – LeAnn Rimes

Danger Zone  – Kenny Loggins

Don’t You (Forget About Me) – Simple Minds

Endless Love  – Lionel Richie & Diana Ross

Evergreen – Barbra Streisand

Eye of the Tiger –  Survivor

Flashdance – What a Feeling – Irene Cara

Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? – Bryan Adams

I’m Alright (Theme from “Caddyshack”) – Kenny Loggins

Into the West -   Howard Shore & Annie Lennox

It Might Be You (From “Tootsie”) –   Stephen Bishop

    Lee- Mrs Robinson/Iris

Crystal: Aquarius/Into the west (if she nails into the west it would be a “moment”

Mike: Kiss from a rose/ Everything I do

Casey: I’m Alright/It might be you

Where did you get this list? The list on iTunes has 50 songs on it, including “Purple Rain” by Prince, which I would love for Crystal to tackle :)

Don’t know those are some hard songs by some phenomenal and legendary singers. I love the song Iris and Lee has the scruffy voice to do it or Bryan Adams but he and everone else had better bring it and bring it in a big way because movie songs are classic and live forever so the judges will be very hard!!

    My Picks:
Lee-(Everything I do) I do for you/Eye of the Tiger
    Crystal-Evergreen/Moon River
    Casey-I’m Alright/Mrs. Robinson
Mike-Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)/Endless Love

  5. Sarah says:

    Crystal should consider “The Rose”

With all due respect, screw this cheese-fest of a list. Here are some picks from movie soundtracks that I have in my own collection:

    1. Crystal: “Cat People (Putting Out the Fire)” by David Bowie (from “Cat People”- 1982 and “Inglourious Basterds”- 2009)

    2. Mike: “Freddie’s Dead” by Curtis Mayfield (from “Super Fly”- 1972)

    3. Lee: “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue öyster Cult (from “Halloween”- 1978 and 2007)

    4. Casey: “Somebody’s Baby” by Jackson Browne (from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”- 1982)

I’m also assuming that, just like last year, they’re also going to have two duets, although I’m not going to even venture a guess for these.

Obviously, though, if “Purple Rain” is on the list, any one of the remaining contestants should fight to the death for it. Quite frankly, I’m shocked that Prince gave his permission to let this crew butcher his song. The only person that has ever been allowed to cover a Prince song on “Idol” was Paris Bennett, and that was undoubtedly a favor to her grandmother (who sang backup vocals on several Prince tracks).

I know this is kind of pointless, but another song that hit me as a good fit for Lee would be Bruce Springsteen’s “Secret Garden” (from “Jerry Maguire”- 1996). It just kind of dismays me to see this list, as it is little more than a collection of cheesy retreads from previous seasons. It’s not like 19E is hurting for cash; why not make the effort to clear new songs? I’m starting to sound like a broken record here…

  8. Diana says:

Oh dear, I see disaster spelled out all over this list. Are they singing two songs?

  9. cassie says:

I heard they’re doing duets and then they’re each getting their own song like last year.

  10. Tushew says:

    Lee – Iris
Crystal – Let the sun shine in
Michael – Kiss from a rose
Casey – Dont you forget about me

  11. kes says:

I agree with Diana. I smell disaster from a mile away. Seriously, I am not even looking forward to this week. Why the hell is “The Rainbow Connection” not on this list? Someone would have made a serious, wicked “moment” from that (especially Lee or Crystal). Really, I can only see the following happening without either one of them looking really cornball:

    Casey: Something from Bryan Adams
    Lee: Mrs. Robinson
Crystal: Has better instincts than I do.
    Mike: don’t care
    Lee/Casey: ?
    Crystal/Mike: Up where we belong

This list just BLOWS CHUNKS! YUCK!

  12. gerritv says:

Movie Theme Week just seems so lame coming this late in the series and so close to the finals. This is not the type of challenging theme that separates the wheat from the chaff. This theme is more appropriate for the top twelve through the top eight. They’re making it so easy for this year’s crop of lacklusters to continue their march to mediocrity.

  13. Allen says:

This movie theme song list is pathetic, and totally disfavors Casey James because there is hardly a rock song on it. There is another good music blog out called “The Jukebox Hero” which its author has written a really good feature on Casey and this crappy song list. I actually agree with the author that Idol is consciously trying to eliminate Casey James based on the deficiency of the song list. Take a look Joe and all Joe’s blog readers. It’s at http://www.thejukeboxhero.com.

  14. Tati says:

Casey- Have ever really loved a womam? / or Iris

He needs to push for another Jealous Guy moment if he wants to outlast Big Mike.

    Crystal- Over the Rainbow

I think she could sing it beautifully.. with her guitar.

Big Mike- Kiss from a Rose

Doesn’t this song just have Mike’s name written all over it? I mean.. he does like those theatrical ballads..

    Lee- Mrs. Robinson

I think he’d do good with this. Its a safe choice.. but honestly… he’s the chosen one now.. He probably can’t do wrong in the judges eyes at this point.

  15. Leo says:

Here’s what I think they should sing.

Lee – “Iris” from City of Angels in 1998
Crystal – “Let the River Run” from Working Girl in 1988
Michael – “Kiss from a Rose” from Batman Forever in 1995
Casey – “Danger Zone” from Top Gun in 1986

  16. Debbi says:

I’m not sure that Lee should do another Simon & Garfunkel song – too much like putting him in a box. I do like “Iris” for him, but wasn’t that the song that David Cook sang in the finale? When Simon panned his choice and thought he should have done “Billie Jean” again?

  17. Leo says:

Actually Debbie, David Cook performed “The World I Know” by Collective Soul on the season 7 finale.
