Look, alright, we seem to be grading on a curve this season. A lot of contestants got praise, I think, just for being not terrible. Last week, contestants like Katie Stevens were terrible, and got a free pass this week just for being mediocre. Is Idol accepting mediocrity as a form of talent?
In what is likely to be an interesting twist of events, I’ve got my recap in my video blog, which you can watch below, but I’ve been asked to write an article in addition to my video recap. Now, if I just rewrite the recap, then you won’t be motivated to WATCH the recap, which is half the fun of me taking the time to record it in the first place.
Instead, I’m going to start a new thing. But first, here’s Part 1 of The Mac Show:
The Top 10 Things I Learned (or Relearned) From Idol Tonight:
1) The judges are scared of losing Crystal Bowersox after losing Lilly and Alex last week and are afraid of praising her performances too much. They’re trying to make it look like someone else might win, but really they just want Crystal.
2) Andrew Garcia really is scared of going home, and is quite desperate. He’s also taking advice from people who aren’t himself.
3) Siobhan’s hairstylist should be shot. You can’t force Siobhan into a style, she is her own style of uniqueness. That’s what people have enjoyed about her.
4) Consequently, Siobhan gave the best “performance” of the night, and also got mad love from the director. Cool colors, a stage entrance, an awesome arrangement… Idol spared no expense to give Crystal someone to battle against now that Lilly is gone.
5) The guitar did NOT win tonight. A lot of guitar players opted to actually use the stage instead of being stuck in one place.
6) Lilly Scott is really gone.
7) Lacey Brown is tone deaf.
Randy is confused as to how many people make up a “quartet”.
9) Aaron Kelly’s mom is really named Kelly Kelly? WTF? Isn’t she married? She actually married someone named Kelly, and didn’t think… maybe I should keep my maiden name? No, I’d rather be a tard for the rest of my life.
10) If Kelly Kelly is her real name, no wonder Aaron Kelly’s real parents ended up on the skids. Who names their child Kelly Kelly?
And since you were so patient, Part 2 of The Mac Show:
Thanks,
Don’t forget to comment!

I agree with you on almost everything.. my son might have said you were reading my recap. Really; I was suprised because I thought maybe I was off tonight. My top three are the same, sadly I did not have a goosebump moment… I’m not sure that’s ever happened at this stage before.
I have problems with Paige on the show, she was pretty decent tonight, not great and is not interesting. I’m offended that she was pimped into the top 12 without ever having a decent performance. That said, I thought her performance was ok, but I would move her down a couple of spots.
There is a lilting tone to Laceys voice that I really like.. today wasn’t great… but at least she’s interesting. If she goes home, fine. It’s not like the Lilly, Alex, Katelyn disaster but I would much rather lose one of the many dreadfully boring ones.
Andrew has so much potential, I keep hoping he will stick around. Great voice, great personality… but I’m starting to realize that my opinion is clouded by his terrific YouTube stuff
I want Aaron, Katie, Paige and Tim to go home. The judges completely screwed this up this year. Can we fast forward?
Oh! And I would like to add… great article name.. “Grading On A Curve?”
There hasn’t been much to dispel that feeling.
Agree with you all the way. Love hearing your comments. Keep up the good work.
Dude, your recaps are becoming quite predictable…..whose going to be last between Katie, Aaron, Lacey and Tim. It’s always those four for the most part and actually Aaron, Katie and Tim were in the top 6 of last nights performances in my opinion. So I disagree. But the best of the night was Siobhan and Crystal was very good.
Great video and analysis! I agree with your first point-the judges are definitely afraid of cramming Crystal down our throats any more since last week’s clusterf*ck. But I thought Siobhan looked AMAZING, and I love her Gashlycrumb Tinies tattoo! Actually, Siobhan’s performance was the only one that made me sit up and go “holy crap!” in a good way. Lacey and Tim are in the most trouble I think. My rankings:
1.Siobhan-incredible control, felt the song
2.Crystal-great as always
3.Michael-interesting arrangement
4.Didi-kind of sexy
5.Casey-liked it, wanted more guitar
6.Andrew-okay, kind of desperate.
7.Katie-good voice, that’s it. no oomph.
8.Paige-okay
9.Lee-didn’t do justice to one of my fave songs
10.Aaron-forgettable
11.Lacey-eek
12.Tim-eek
Jason-
That’s just the way the cookie rolls. The judges, and most of America, felt the same way about Tim that I did. I can understand the Aaron debacle, since the judges proclaimed him one of the best, but I didn’t like the song and he didn’t really make it his own.
My rankings are as follows:
1.) Siobhan– Admittedly, there were a few bum notes, and I didn’t love this performance upon initial viewing. But then I watched again. And again. And again. She has a fantastic instument, and is one of the only truly exciting contestants this year.
2.) Crystal– Same old Crystal. Predictably awesome.
3.) Lee– Despite a case of nerves (again) and mumble-mouth (also again), I really enjoyed what he did with the song. I really like Lee, but he needs to get over the nerves and make me LOVE him.
4.) Didi– Very nice vocal for her, despite flubbing the lyrics and of botching that final note. She definitely made it her own.
5.) Mike– He has excellent vocals, but his hamminess is absolutely killing me. Just take it down a notch. Or five.
6.) Casey– Sounded good, but looked super uncomfortable.
7.) Aaron– He was actually in tune this week, and actually somewhat connected to the material. I didn’t love the song choice for him, though.
8.) Paige– I cannot believe I’m ranking her as high as 8th, but compared to the four people ranked below her, she sounded amazing.
9.) Andrew– How did I used to love you so much? How? You took my favorite Stones song and basically crapped all over it.
10.) Lacey– I also used to love Lacey coming out of Hollywood week. Her voice is grating to me now. She sounded bad, and the weird, sped-up “Still, I’m gonna miss you” in her ” Ruby Tuesday” cover drove me crazy.
11.) Tim– No. No. NO! He only gets the 11th spot because the last person on the list has become my punching bag for the season.
12.) Katie– I have a new punching bag every season (Nikki McKibbin, Kim Caldwell, Jasmine Trias, Constantine Maroulis, Kat McPhee, Sanjaya, Syesha Mercado, and Danny Gokey got that unfortunate distinction in seasons past), and this year it’s name is Katie. She has a decent enough voice (sometimes), but I don’t know why I cannot like this girl. Little Miss Teen Pageant Queen needs to go!!!! Why is she even here?
Is no one going to mention Kara’s comment – at least twice last night – “I agree with the guys on this…” The “guys” to whom she was referring were Randy and ELLEN (who is not a guy). Kara’s obvious dislike for Ellen already shows, without her making derisive and passive comments like that.
Hey Kelly I agree when Katie sings it reminds me of a pageant the way she is always doing her head and eyes looks like the talent portion of Miss County Cornshuck or something. She strikes me as a spoiled little rich brat.
I’m surprised that hasn’t come up too.
Spot on Mac. I would agree with most, but would have swapped Crystal and Shiobhan.
I really loathe Kara and wish she would go though
About kelly kelly, you said ” …I’d rather be a tard for the rest of my life.”
Actually, you’re the ‘turd’ for using that word.
