Update 3:  Looks like it is still unknown.  Ryan just tweeted:

RyanSeacrest

I’m still in a run thru..uncertain. Planning for either way RT @CallofKJ: @RyanSeacrest Any news on Crystal Bowersox? #americanidol 3 minutes ago via UberTwitter

Update 2: There is a TWITTER that a viewer just tweeted that says Fox 5 in NY is reporting that Crystal will perform.  Do we trust a Tweet from a viewer???

UPDATE!!!! Ryan Seacrest just Tweeted That he and the Idol Producers are in a meeting at this very moment to discuss what to do about Crystal Bowersox.  If they determine that she is not well enough to perform (There would be major insurance liabilities, should she go on and something happened to her, after all), then the female front runner could be disqualified.  Another option would be to have people vote on a video of some sort of past performance. (Hollywood, her initial audition, or even last weeks performance, for instance).  One thing is all but certain: If Crystal in in the voting lineup tonight, she will get enough votes to survive the week.  But then, I am sure that another major concern for the Idol bosses is “What if she is not able to perform next week.”??

Despite an extra 24 hours to recover, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether American Idol finalist Crystal Bowersox will be well enough to sing in tonight’s live performance show.

Crystal, 24, fell ill and had been hospitalized yesterday sending producers scrambling to figure out a solution to prevent from having to disqualify her from competition. Ryan talked to Executive Producer Ken Warwick Wednesday to clear up some of the confusion and shed some light on Crystal’s condition. Watch the chat with Ken above.

This is undeniably heartbreaking for Crystal, but the only fair thing that “Idol” can do here is to disqualify her. It’s just not fair to the 9 other girls to give Crystal a pass to the next round and make the rest of them perform. They could also have no elimination this week and eliminate all four girls next week, but that would be unfair to the guys, who would have had to compete in one additional performance round. I don’t see any other way around this situation if Crystal can’t perform, which is just awful for her (and all of us, quite frankly).

I agree with the last post. Though it is a heartbreaking story, the fact of the matter is that it is a competition and their is rules and procedures to follow. If would absolutely unfair to a other 9 girls that crystal gets a bye to the next round and one of them get eliminated. To be objective you have the remember that these 9 ladies equally deserve to be there as crystal. What would guys think if this happened to haeley and she got bye. I would not guess if you guys and gals have a positive or negative response too. The only fair thing is to dq her if she cannot muster up the strength to perform tonight.

This happened on Simon’s X Factor 2 years ago. They let contestant Diane Vickers skip the week and passed her thru without singing after saying she came down with laryngitis. It should be an interesting decision.

I heard a rumor that they may be asking the higher vote getter of Ashley/Janell to come back and perform last minute, that way they dont have to change up the timing of the show and commercials and can eliminate two girls rather than one.

Bringing back a voted-off contestant would cause too much of a fuss. So I doubt we’ll see Ashley or Janell come back.

As I see it, the producers have three real choices if Crystal can’t sing tonight:

    1. Eliminate 1, giving Crystal a free pass to next week.
    2. Eliminate none, and factor this week’s votes into next week, eliminating 4 next week to get to the 6 female finalists.
    3. Disqualify Crystal — but give her a guaranteed spot in next season’s top 12 in return (which would give her a year to work with her doctors to get her diabetes better controlled) — and eliminate 1 tonight.

Simply disqualifying Crystal without making it up to her down the road could well kill the show. The backlash they’d get for DQ’ing a “sick woman” would be brutal.

    I read the posts.

They brought back a voted off contestant on So You Think You Can Dance. They could do it.

But I think they’d be stupid to let Crystal go. She’s a front runner. They know it. They should do what they can to keep her on the show.

They can’t start bending the rules, even for a good singer. If she can’t perform, she should be DQ’d.

I don;t think it would b breaking a rule. They probably have never had a rule for this type of event.

She doesn’t have a cold or laryngitis or an upset stomach she has a real life threatening medical condition so simply DQing her would not be fair. On SYTYCD one of the front runners had a medical emergency and withdrew before he ever got to perform because it would take him moths to get well, Most of these shows allow a one week pass for real (hospital trip) illness. I’m interested to see what they do.

Okay so here is my ‘2 cents’…literally LOL… I think that if AI is not allowing her to perform due to liability issues, then they should work something out for her. If it is not AI, and she just doesn’t feel good enough to perform then she should be DQ’d… (Don’t hate. She is not my fave but I do think she is one of the better ones!)

I could see them disqualifying Crystal, and then signing her to 19E/Arista, get an album out and send her off on the Lilith Fair Tour this summer. Crystal is basically a AAA artist. I think that would make most people happy.

Ken said on Ryan’s show if you can’t do your final round in the olympics your DQ’ed… I think it’s only fair they treat her the same as they would treat anyone else. Playing favorites is not cool

Crystal is the most talented of all the girls. I am sad for her and the viewers. She was my pick along with Casey in the finale.

If her problem is uncontrolled DMI, away from home and in the middle of stressful competition is not a good scenario for getting it under control. She’s one of my favorites too, but what are they going to do the next time this happens-it’s not a one time fix-more like a 24/7 tightrope until she’s better controlled in a week? a month? “Golden Ticket” for next year and hopefully some label will sing her before then?
