American Idol Top 20 Pre Show Discussion

Possible spoiler for Casey James is Gavin DeGraw’s “I Don’t Want To Be” via @WeHoDaily.

The theme for tonight is once again, the loose “Billboard Hot 100, Top 10 Songs”.  What do you all think the contestants should sing?

s9-top20

I think that Katie Stevens needs to sing something to make herself appear to be what she actually is – A 17 year old girl.  Lilly Scott needs to sing some  popular indie type song.  Crystal Bowersox should do as Simon suggested last week and break out some David Bowie.  Casey James needs to stick with good ol’ southern rock.  Whatever Didi Benami chooses, she needs to mix it up – make it her own – to have a break out performance.  Siobhan Magnus needs to sing a really popular pop/rock song.  Maybe like Poison or Whitesnake.  Andrew Garcia just needs to do what he is the best at doing this year.  Taking a really cheesy pop song and reworking it.  Every time that he sings a song straight, it will be a disappointment.  He is so great, because of how he arranges the songs.  I could see Todrick Hall doing some Gold Digger really well.  Aaron Kelly could have a great night with John Mayer.  Alex Lambert and Tim Urban do have pretty good voices in there somewhere – They both just need to relax and stop looking like a deer caught in the headlights.

I would love to hear all of your suggestions – please post away.  :)

Are you planning to attend Idol dress rehearsals this year? If so, I need your help! I need reporters willing to call me right after dress with song spoilers. Contact me if you are interested!

Me = HUGE Lacey fan (trust me the girl can sing, she just had a BAD night) — I hope she pulls out a Nelly Furtato type of quirky vocal. Hopefully upbeat. If she can pull that off tonight, I think more people will warm up to her.

I personally would love to see Siobhan sing a modern rock song. Maybe something by a female rock singer.

Lilly definitely needs to stick to her indie strengths and DiDi needs to show off her pipes.

    Crystal-”Imagine” by John Lennon
Didi-”A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton
Haeley-”Famous in a Small Town” by Miranda Lambert
    Katelyn-”Fighter” by Christina Aguilera
    Katie-”So Small” by Carrie Underwood
    Lacey-”Summertime” by DuBose Heyward
    Lilly-”Celebrity Skin” by Hole
    Michelle-”No Air” by Jordin Sparks
Paige-”You Are Not Alone” by Michael Jackson
    Siobhan-”Zombie” by The Cranberries

That’s a great suggestion for Siobhan. Out of the 20, I’m most looking forward to seeing what tricks she pulls out of her hat this week. High hopes for Crystal and Andrew as well. (And I’m reading ALL your posts!)

I think “Zombie” will be too much rock for Shiobhan, unless she does accoustic. I would much rather hear her perform “I would do anything for love” by meatloaf or “Alone” by heart.

“Imagine” sounds good for Crystal, though I wont be surprised if she ends up taking on Bowie as Simon suggested.

Didi needs to stick to her guns like she did when she performed “Terrified”. So ya, “A thousand miles” or “Buses and Trains” sound good.

Katie needs to perform anything younger. Michelle should stick to a diva RnB tune. I’m not sure what Paige should perform and Lily should stick to jazz/blues. Dont think the other 3 will make it to the top 12 so dont really mind what they do

“I Don’t Want To Be?” You have to be kidding me. What a cliched, played-out song choice for Casey to make. We’ve already seen this song done by four different contestants in past seasons, and I doubt that anyone (aside from Gavin DeGraw himself) will ever do it better than Bo Bice did in season 4. I’m really hoping that Casey had rights clearance issues with his song choice, and- given the rushed show schedule due to Crystal’s hospitalization- had no choice but to pick a song that “Idol” had ready to use. If not, it doesn’t exactly speak very well of his imagination.

I would love to hear Casey sing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen and play his guitar. I’m crossing my fingers. He is my favorite and Crystal is talented too.

Crystal Bowersox is the one to beat this year. Hope she keeps her focus.
