American Idol 2010: Theme is Changed for Week 11

March 21st, 2010 by Joes Place Leave a reply »

Thanks to MJ we now have confirmed that the theme for week 11 of American Idol Season 9 has been changed from Teen Idols to Billboard’s #1 hits.

The mentor for the week is a secret but we do know Fred Bronson was there as a Billboard expert.  He tweeted:  Just got home from a production shoot.  What was I doing?  Watch American Idol Tuesday night and find out.

Fred Bronson is best known for a weekly column in Billboard Magazine called “Chart Beat” and is the author of several books related to the billboard charts.  He has been used on idol before during billboard theme weeks to discuss the charts with the contestants.

I have no idea why the theme was changed; perhaps there was not enough songs released by teen idols for the contestants to choose from.  Can’t wait to see the secret mentor Tuesday night.  Remember there is a rumor Miley Cyrus and one of the Jonas brothers will sing on Wednesday but not sure if this is true.

Why do you think Idol changed the theme and who is the possible secret mentor?

I’m thinking maybe Christina Aguilera for the mystery mentor. She has her long awaited album releasing soon. Her website has some sort of mystery countdown set to end noon EDT Tuesday. Many think its the first single from the album. She’s an RCA artist, so Idol is a natural place to do the first televised performance of the new single. She’s well acquainted with BB #1′s, having three off her debut album. Just my best guess.

I’m still wondering why the AI blogs are now reporting that the theme “changed”.

Was the “Teen Idol” theme ever verified other than that one tweet by some unknown individual?

It was never on the official AI site, nor did Ryan or anyone else verify it.

FOX released a statement on Thursday that the theme was Teen Idols. Maybe the song choices were going poorly and they didn’t want to have a really bad show?

I do believe “Teen Idol” was the original theme. I remember seeing a status update from Michael on Friday saying that he had to change songs.

Obviously, I don’t know if this is the case, but- given the late nature of this theme change- it seems to me that it was probably prompted by some of the contestants having trouble with “teen idol” songs (I’m looking at you, Crystal Bowersox and Katie Stevens). Looking through the list of “Billboard” #1 hits over the past 55 years, quite a few of them were done by artists that could have been considered “teen idols.” I’d bet pretty strongly that the majority of the contestants will stick with the song that they had originally chosen for this week, while the contestants that had problems will pick songs from more “adult” artists.

This just keeps getting better and better. From MJ’s Big Blog:

“Miley Cyrus will appear as a guest mentor on AMERICAN IDOL and help the Top 11 finalists – Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus, Paige Miles, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban – prepare for their performances on a Billboard No.1 Hits-themed show airing Tuesday, March 23 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.

Tune in to the results show the following night, Wednesday, March 24 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed), to see Cyrus perform her hit “When I Look At You,” watch Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato sing “Make A Wave,” and find out who receives enough votes to stay in the competition and who is sent home.”

Miley Cyrus?! Are you kidding me, “Idol!” Like she’s going to be able to teach anyone ANYTHING! If this isn’t a sign that the producers want a teen winner this year (read: Katie Stevens or Aaron Kelly), I don’t know what is. Ugh…
