‘American Idol’: The first real shocker of the season

April 30th, 2009 by Joes Place Leave a reply »
In the home stretch, we finally got a real “American Idol” shocker. In Wednesday’s elimination show, Adam Lambert, the theatrical singer who had seemed to be a front-runner for the “Idol” crown, was in the bottom two.

How very interesting. The night after Fox fended off a strong showing from CBS in the overall ratings numbers (Fox had 16.1 million total live viewers, according to TV by the Numbers, compared to CBS’ 15.1 million), this season of “Idol” became a horse-race, not merely the coronation of a front-runner.

Finally, there’s some real drama on that “Idol” stage. And for Fox, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Will the Adam situation halt the decline in “Idol’s” live ratings? Who knows. At least the drama made the crowning of the Final Four more interesting, though we saw that the judges’ save wasn’t much of a save at all, as Matt Giraud went home.

Now, I’ve got no massive love for Adam. I think he can sing and he’s entertaining, but the fact is, I don’t really have any particular favorite this season. I’ve been pretty vocal, in fact, about having been fairly bored with “Idol” this year.

Still, it was shocking to see Adam in the bottom two. There are a couple of possible explanations: Adam’s fans thought he was safe, so they stopped calling for him. Or maybe his performance on Tuesday was just not that good. Perhaps Adam’s poor showing was due to some combination of those two factors?

I certainly found his Tuesday performance predictable — Adam tends to do the same Broadway-style schtick every time. It’s strange how the judges seem to rip on contestants every year for sticking with the same formula week after week, but they can’t praise Adam enough, despite the fact that his performances are somewhat repetitive. Then again, the judges pro-Adam cheerleading has almost become a running joke this season.

So do you think he’s going to win? I think Allison’s sure to go soon. Do you think it’ll be a Danny-Adam final, or a Kris-Adam final? Share your thoughts in the comment area

I’ve been wondering if the voters who gave Taylor Hicks the crown are still viewing and voting? I tend to look at Danny and see Taylor. I don’t think AI wants to go down that road again. IMO Adam has the better chance at worldwide stardom which would continue to enhance the show’s mystique and popularity.

I rewatched the show and Ryan never said that Danny and Allison were the top two vote getters. He just said that they were safe. He did say the Kris and Adam and Matt were the bottom three, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they had the least amounts of votes. It just means that Ryan assigned them the bottom three spots. With one of them being the contestant that had the least amount of votes (Matt). He never said that Adam was one of the two with the least amount of votes. He just said he was in the bottom two. Matt had the lowest amount of votes and therefore was kicked off.

I am beyond happy adam was in bottom 2 because look how it lit a fire under adam veoters, i mean we are determined now, what if allison woulda been in bottom 2? all the apilt voters woulda leaned towards her and got adam booted!! now listen, I hope Danny is in the top 2 again next week and that his fans become complacent and for the top 3, he will be voted off..hahah…we need to think..we needed that scare, adam needed that scare..it gives him more motivation as it does us..this is the BEST THING that oucld happen..

    remember daughtry folks..

when your on top the only place to go is down

  4. Glenda says:

Yeah, gina–Ryan did say it. Re-watch the segment after Jamie Foxx does his performance. Ryan is talking to Jamie and asked the 2 boys to come onto the stage. Ryan — to Jamie (exact quote), “Did Amrica get this right tonight? This is the bottom TWO here.”

  5. suebrody says:

I am not surprised that Adam was in the bottom 3 (Danny has a huge fan base, and Allison is getting votes from other consitutenties, I believe, like Lil’s, who said to vote for Allison, and maybe Anoop’s, though I have no idea with him; I thought his would go to Kris, if anyone). I do NOT know if Adam was B2, and there is a very good chance he was not, but did it make for high drama? You bet it did. Do you think the internet would be all aflutter if Kris had been bottom 2? No, it would not be (not saying it didn’t matter, but Kris has never been the front runner that Adam and Danny have been).

To wit: Last year they said there were only a million votes separating Syesha, Archie, and Cook the week that Castro was booted (Top 4). I’m sorry, but I find that very, very hard to believe. I am sure that Castro was slaughtered in the voting (he said he wanted off the show), but I also can’t believe the Davids received, say, 15 million votes a piece, Syesha got 14 million, and Jason got 1 million (I’m exaggerating, but you know what I mean). IF this was true, then why did they throw Syesha under the bus the following week? They just wanted viewership for Top 3, and then they could squash her, and make it a David v David finale. I absolutely agreed with that finale, but she had NO chance. They gave her a PENGUINS song for the producers’ choice, and then blamed her for not doing enough with it. A PENGUIN song, people! C’mon now.

I don’t care what Ryan said about B2. True, not true, it made for big time viewership. Bigger than the other results’ shows have received.

i believe there is a concerted effort by the organized voting efforts for kris to discredit and disrespect adam due to his sexual preferences. i have noticed more and more provocative pictures published on websites that promote adam’s homosexuality and provocative behavior. i am a huge adam fan, always vote and everyone i know is an adam fan and votes. my sister voted 465 times tuesday nite! i watch the show on west coast time and i can hardly EVER get through to vote for adam. i think the “religious zealots” and the fanbase for kris had more to do with last nite’s shocker than anything else. i have noticed that kris’s numbers are not great and have been surprised that he hasn’t been in the bottom three before last nite.

Joes Place: Jackson: The difference is that Idol is classified as a REALITY SHOW and Not a Game Show.It gives the producers to do whatever they want.I do believe they screw with the bottom 3 however the person with the lowest votes does go home.

Joe’s right on this.. They also will NOT certify results, even at the finale, because they retain the right to throw out votes, or override the audience. It is in every idol’s contract. It was discovered during Season 2 after the Clay vs Ruben showdown. When push came to shove, AI couldn’t certify that Ruben got the most votes, and a statement was issued that this show is a “reality show” for “entertainment purposes.”

  8. slinky says:

Drama, Drama, Drama that is what the producers wanted and that’s what they got. Everybody reiled up about it. Believe me Adam wasn’t in the bottom. They put him there for the effect. And it worked. Look what everyone is talking about. Ratings folks….

  9. downeast says:

Holy shit. You realize this essentially gives them license to manipulate it any way they want?

Talk about being played for suckers. They must just sit back and giggle at all of these impassioned fans.

Still going to vote my ass off, though.

    but now I’m sad again.

    • Joes Place says:

Exactly, Downeast. That why Idol will NEVER be classified as a “game show”. Too many rules to follow. As a reality show they can make it up as they go along.

And don’t be sad, Downeast, The one with the lowest votes ALWAYS goes home and the one with the highest, wins. ALWAYS.

Gina, you are in BIG DENIAL!!!!!!!!! (:

    1) If there are 5 people, and 3 are in the bottom 3, then the other 2 DID HAVE MORE VOTES! What else would the bottom 3 mean?

    2) He did say Adam was in bottom 2, he called it the bottom 2, which means they had less votes than the other 3.

Is it me, but some of the Adam fans CANNOT and WILL NOT accept 4th place out of 5 places this week without it being a 1) hoax 2) conspiracy 3) typo 4) verbiage slip 5) producer ratings ploy 6)end of mankind 7) vote splitters nervana 8)alien intervention.

We beat the Glamberts! We beat the Glamberts! (:

  11. suebrody says:

Man, Jackson, you are hating on the Lambert fans, no?

Bottom line: Adam was in the bottom 2, 3, 100, doesn’t matter. He or Matt was going home. Matt went home. Adan needs your votes (or, if you’re Jackson, someone else’s votes). So vote and then…well, you’ve done all you can do.

  12. Jackson says:

I actually like Adam, alot. He’s one of Idol great entertainers (not necessarily singers) of ALL TIME. I’m just teasing, it’s just amazing to watch people come up with all the different reasons to explain away the obvious.

  13. Glenda says:

    Bill,

I would think that not the same ones doing their thing on votefornumber1 can construe DialIdol, plus be doing a number on real voting results.

There HAS to be a real incentive to fuss with the phone lines. Watch the betting sites. Sure–it’s easy to hack into the data base–change some line codes and put in any number you want–but, boy–I cannot imagine doing that just to get your guy or gal a win–the penalty is pretty severe. I can only imagine that happening for a monetary gain–and a big one.

Yes–the Idol peeps can control or throw out votes. It’s the only control they have against Phone Phreakers. They do try to single them out and their votes do get thrown out. Regular phone or regular texting votes don’t get thrown out.

FCC does handle the complaints. If there is any evidence of vote fixing–they would investigate. However, most of the complaints are how they cannot get through, but logjams start at the local level.

  14. Blackhawks FTW says:

What makes me mad is all the dirty tricks some contestant’s fan bases pull I saw an e-mail from a local church saying if you do not vote for ***** you will be punished. I think that is just wrong and many many people are very impressionable. IMO if I were TPTB at Idol I would disqualify those contstants.

  15. bridgeymah says:

Wow aren’t TPTB clever little bunnies.

Everyone is all riled and and here we go again all with our opinions, so sure we KNOW what will ensure HNN gets the bit old lump of white bread in the vast state of dumbfuckikstan to vote for him.

Meh – whatever. HNN has a plan, has worked pretty well so far whether he is in B3, B2 or was top vote getting being fucked with he is still there. Top 4 (his little hand rub on the ear when he was safe is s theater message apparently him telling his fans all good). I trust he knows what he is doing and that he wants to win but on his terms, not by becoming a slightly edgier version of Gokey Pokey and Puppies and Rainbows.

And moving on – How about Feeling Good… cause after I lost count of listens it is feeling very good. It is so solidly Adam in every way (and in that I trust)…

because the Adam is built in.

  16. gina says:

Jackson – are you a Gokey fan? Why all the hostility? I’m just saying that he didn’t say these two got the lowest votes, he said they were the bottom two. It’s different. He didn’t say that Gokey and Allison were the top two. He said they were safe. So, they aren’t necessarily the top two, or he would have said it.

  17. bridgeymah says:

And for all those who are promoting HNN to “water it down” because no matter how you spin it (appeal to the “masses”) that is what you want him to do:

    From TWoP

“Let’s put Flo Rida in the mix and see how many casual votes he gets.”

    WORD to that.

  18. JazzRocks says:

Regarding next week – I think they’ve already picked their songs, so Adam probably can’t change much at this point. I say that because in one of his confessionals (or an interview – I forget which) he said song choice was definitely the hardest thing. And once you’ve picked it you have to go with it if you change your mind later. (I’m paraphrasing)

He’s expected to do well in Rock week so the pressure is high once again. Matt was expected to do well on Jazz Week cause it was his genre. How did that work out?

I wish there were some way to get him to read Bill’s earlier post about next week’s performances. It’s great advice. Do we know there will be 2 songs next week?

All of his fans power voting for 2 hours is imperative. But it’s not enough. It can’t be just us. He needs new voters – fans of the departed ones & casual voters with no strong favorite.

So now not only can’t we trust Dial Idol, but votenumberone was way the hell off too. So we know nothing until the results are announced.

  19. Bridgeymah says:

This is my last comment on the B2 heard around the world…I have read many people on HNN forums who admitted either they or people they knew didn’t vote or didn’t vote as much or switched to voting for second favorite this week. If you consider that as a sample size across country you have a significant change in HNN vote. He has pretty broad appeal and wide fan base he needs to … Butt there I go. Not going to say what he needs to do. What he’s been doing has been pretty terrific. Just keep doing that.

Because the Adam is built in.

  20. Jackson says:

  22. Jackson says:

Joes Place: lol.. I was just teasing you, jackson. You said something about “We beat the glamberts”.

Tease away! I had mentioned in one the earlier posts that someone in Allison’s folder on American Idol site had posted on the subject line of an entry “We Beat the Lamberts!”….no matter the fact that Allison had escaped a possible elimination, but was so happy that her fans had outvoted his fans.

    Sorry Jackson – didn’t know.

  24. gina says:

I really would though, like to see him look like he did in the results show for at least one performance show. Not dressed up in the theme of that week. I hope he picks two really good songs and just sings them well. I will for sure vote as much as I can.

I would like to see Adam wear something really really wild, like almost like the guy in the Kiss band. I think it was shocking to see him suit and tie, but it’s good for about one time.

  26. Mike says:

I’m going to laugh if Adam is eliminated because all of you are clinging to your conspiracy theories. Adam was almost eliminated. He is not above the things that happened to Chris Daughtry. If fans don’t vote harder, he will be eliminated.

  27. downeast says:

“I would like to see Adam wear something really really wild, like almost like the guy in the Kiss band.”

See that’s where YMMV. Unless he decides to sabotage himself and go down in a blaze of Adam, (and there’s a little tiny defiant part of me that wants him to do just that), I’d rather see him in a pair of jeans and a tee shirt (plus the emo hair, I love the emo hair) just letting his voice do the talking. No gratuitous glory notes, just a mike stand….just Adam’s voice, proving he doesn’t need anything else.

  28. missy says:

Didn’t have time to read all the posts so apologies up front if this is a repeat.

I want Adam to win like veryone else, but Tuesday night I did split my votes for Allison because Simon threw her under the bus and I was hoping she’d stick around for the rock theme week.

However, the vast majority of my 2 hours of voting went to Adam. AND, I received a busy signal only a few times.

Conclusion: Adam fan were not voting and he ended up in the bottom 2.

If you want Adam in the finale, then you need to vote like crazy.

  29. lled says:

I wish people would stop the DialIdol, Vote4Number1, IdolMap, and other prediction tools nonsense. Just vote for the contestant who you want to win instead of trying to vote ‘strategically’. I can believe that Adam was in the bottom two/three because some of his fans were too busy coming up with voting plans to get Adam’s best buddy to the finale instead of focusing on Adam.

  30. wizkid says:

This is exactly what I have been saying. I know it is true. Its manipulation.

  31. Mike says:

Seacrest said to Jamie Foxx: “This is the bottom 2. Did America get it right?” What do you people not understand from that?

  32. Meg says:

I just read on another blog that in an after-elimination interview, Matt said that Adam wasn’t happy with his performance the previous night; so when Adam chose to go to the Danny/Allison group, he thought he was putting himself in the bottom group!

So does that mean he wasn’t humiliated? Maybe he was just startled that Ryan was moving him across the stage?

    Your thoughts, please.

  33. Glenda says:

    BUSY SIGNALS

Most wats logjams start at the local level. YOUR area doesn’t have enough lines or are not trunkated to handle the traffic.

Few are on Idol’s end. Probably less than 10%.

  34. lled says:

Forgot to add…Adam’s studio version of “Feeling Good”? Beyond words…it is gorgeous. Dare I say, it is the first studio version that I prefer over the live version.

  35. suebrody says:

Meg, I have both heard and read that, too. I didn’t realize it at the time, but Adam thought he was going to the B2 side, not the Top 2 side. And if you look at Adam after the performance on Tuesday night, it was the FIRST time he didn’t smile OR or thank the judges or the audience. He just stood there. It was a kind of odd. Also, from what Matt said in a couple of interviews I heard on mj’s blog, both he AND Adam thought they could be going home.

I don’t think there was a humiliation factor, I think Adam was surprised at who the B3 was, b/c Simon had praised Matt so much. But who knows? It happened in 5 seconds! We just like to analyze it. :)

  36. calling all great minds says:

Great Minds think alike! Numerous comments here re-iterated my same thoughts at the shock of Adam having to choose what side he belonged with. My first thought too was this must be rigged for sensational purposes so home viewer stays involved, and to
believe there is a competition. Not to take away from Allison who is my 2nd or 3rd favorite, next to Kris. She had a sublime performance this week and was deserving of her spot. I thought, some viewers may have used some votes that would have been used exclusively for Adam, in hope to keep her around a little longer, so she will be paired with Adam in the end. Even Doh!key had a great performance, and I felt for once, he too really was deserving of his spot, at least for this weeks performance. He even said himself when asked if there is anything besides Jamie Foxx mentoring, that helped him to achieve his performance, and he replied there is another he looks to, but won’t name names. We all knew who he meant. He who is HIM, have influenced those in this seasons top to step up their game, and become far better performers than they would have ever envisioned for themselves. Still, I am perplexed how Doh!key has never been in the bottom three with such bland performances in the past. The only thought I came up with was that he must be adept at having enough fans maximizing dialidol, because polls, I-tune downloads, and internet activity certainly don’t indicate such popularity. Even though I would like nothing more than to have Adam to ourselves a little sooner by having him voted off, so he would have the freedom to be the artist we envision, this would be selfish. Adam wants to win! He gives us what we want every week, so it is our turn to help give him what he wants and needs, and that is our vote over and over. This is where we must look to Doh!key’s tactic of ensuring every vote counts, and downloading dialidol software to help cast votes. We also need to be pounding away on our cell phones, texting or calling in our vote over and over to ensure Greatness is
    rewarded, and not mediocracy.

No he didn’t! He said “based on last night”. Matt’s performance was praised heavily by Simon and Allison Iraheta, depending on how you view it, was as much a goner going into last night as Matt.
Yes i’ve read a couple of Matt’s interviews today that confirmed my doubt. Adam wasn’t happy with his performance Tues night and chose the Bottom 3 group :(
Matt even said that Kris and him asked Adam why he didn’t choose them as the B3 group backstage.

Here’s the quote from US Weekly:
    Q. US Weekly: Were you surprised at the bottom three?
    A. Matt: I was definitely surprised that Adam was down there with me. It was a cruel twist for him to have to pick who he thought was in the bottom three. We were giving him a hard time backstage, like, “Why didn’t you pick us?” It was uncomfortable but I could deal with it.

Just get over it Adam fans. Other contestants have been in the B3 who clearly did not deserve it. IT HAPPENS. I think it’s a bit wimpy for those Adam fans who are “having heart attacks” and crying and fantasizing about him and his voice. It’s JUST a show. And we all know whether Adam wins or not that he’s going to have a great career.

I think Kris will be the one to go. Adam is a lock for the finale now that his fans are emotionally distroyed and will vote like there’s no tomorrow for him. Danny will somehow get the votes, and next week is Allison’s genre. As some people have said, Allison is gaining momentum. It wasn’t because Adam fans split votes (although it definitely was a big help). She’s the only girl left and people are confused as to why she’s been in the b3 so many times.

I think it’ll come down to Allison and Kris with Kris leaving. We know what he’s going to do. Same thing he always does.

The smooth build the slide into a bit of jazz funk the power up and walking it back down. All were there in the performance but too short to have proper effect. No such issue here. Just Glam-Jazz-Rock-Pop masterpiece. Gets better with each listen.

Adam wasn’t happy with his performance Tues night and chose the Bottom 3 group Matt even said that Kris and him asked Adam why he didn’t choose them as the B3 group backstage. Here’s the quote from US Weekly:Q. US Weekly: Were you surprised at the bottom three?A. Matt: I was definitely surprised that Adam was down there with me. It was a cruel twist for him to have to pick who he thought was in the bottom three. We were giving him a hard time backstage, like, “Why didn’t you pick us?” It was uncomfortable but I could deal with it.So HATERS, STFU.

Michelle, I saw the exact same kind of interview on Entertainment Weekly.com and Adam didn’t pick the group he thought was the bottom 3, he picked the group he thought was going to be safe. If you go back and watch it Ryan never said Adam was safe, he said pick a group. Not pick the bottom 3 group. Because in past seasons they have never done a bottom 3 in top 5 week, just a bottom 2, so maybe Adam knew this and picked Danny and Allison because he thought they would be safe, and Matt and Kris were the bottom 2.

    Here’s the interview.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Now that we’ve gotten to the bottom of that, we can talk about Ryan making Adam choose between the two groups last night. What was going through your mind? Come to my side! Come to my side!
MATT GIRAUD: I really didn’t care what side he was gonna come on. If I was him, though, I probably would have sat down. I would have pulled an Archuleta and not said anything. But Adam was just being real. He’ll tell you what he thinks. He’s not afraid of hurtin’ you. Our feelings weren’t hurt. Kris and I joked about it with him. ”Why didn’t you pick us, dude?”
