Matt Giraud: “I definitely want to sing pop music”

Matt Giraud’s personality is just something that you really can’t put your finger on. I think I would call it soul with an edge. And I definitely see some Taylor Hicks in him, which unlike Simon, I consider a compliment.

Here’s some of what Matt had to say during his media conference call…

On Simon criticizing his fashion sense: “I don’t know why he’s always hatin’ on me. I just trusted the wardrobe people with that one and they said go for it. And who really takes fashion advice from Simon anyway? I mean, come on.”

On singing pop music: “I definitely will attempt it again. I definitely want to sing pop music. I guess I just picked the wrong kind of rock song. Who knows? Maybe I’ll pop out a J.T. (Justin Timberlake) song.”

On his dream mentor: “Billy Joel would be ridiculous.”

On the judges’ criticism that he went over the top: “It’s ‘American Idol,’ man, what the heck, you know? I mean sometimes it’s a little bit over the top. I mean, last night I was singing for my life. I gotta bring it, so if it goes a little over the top, that’s alright.”

On the music he’d like to make in the future: “I’d love to work with Billy Joel, Elton John, those iconic piano singers. Maybe even Alicia Keys. I had someone call me the white boy Alicia Keys, so that was pretty funny.”

On the judges’ criticism of his first performance of “Vida la Vida”: “I felt they were a little harsh. But I definitely couldn’t sleep that night. I felt like I let a lot of people down.”

On White Chocolate, the group he was part of during Hollywood Week: “It was a group thing. Kris Allen and I kind of took the reins. There was no drama so we didn’t get that much airtime. White Chocolate is what people used to call me as a child.” Later, someone asked why he was called White Chocolate. “I was one of the only lighter kids in the gospel choir in Detroit. I learned that kind of music—church music. That’s why I tried to take them to church [Thursday] night.”

On the best advice he’s received from the judges: “Stick to what you’re good at and nail what you’re good at.”

    LOVE, love, love this guy.

People can pick apart personalities all day. But what it comes down to is the voice…and this guy has GOT IT. No denying that. I truly believe he is the most marketable and talented contestant on the show! Matt Giraud FTW!

  2. Mariooo says:

go back to keyboard/piano, Matt, and give the best you got this week!.. hit the ball out of the park !!

  3. Titina says:

I am so looking forward to what he brings next!
He has loads of talent, he just needs to be careful on what he chooses to sing. I hope he learned his lesson when he sang Coldplay. It looks like he did.
With the right songs, he could be a dark horse in this competition.

I can’t wait to see him back playing the keyboards,I hope he brings it for MJ week.
    Go Matt.

  4. Laura says:

I really don’t like him at all; he completely rubs me the wrong way. But even I have to admit he’s a serious contender and he’s more talented than some of other guys who have a similar style, which is pretty much every guy aside from Adam…by making the right choices Matt could definitely go far.

    Ricky was robbed.

  6. Phoenix says:

I feel the same way that Matt rubs me the wrong way but if he wants to sing pop music that is his death wish, if he wants to make it far listen to the judges and do your thing (the blues). That’s my advice but if he wants to do pop he can be my guest, better for Allison :) =P

  7. Sarah says:

He is forgettable, I doubt he will crack the top 10 along with Michael and Jorge.
He always puts on that smug attitude when the judges critique him which is a major turn off.

  8. Chadd says:

Blues artists don’t make as much money as pop artists. And I’m glad that him and Kris Allen goto church, maybe we’ll be lucky and they’ll produce some top notch christian music.

  9. Leah says:

I don’t understand the comment about the smug attitude with the judges. He has never backtalked to them like some other contestants do. He really listens to what they say and is very coachable.

I think many opinions will change as he gets with the piano. He is an incredible entertainer (review his Georgia performance, and White Chocolate). He is actually very humble and a very funny guy. That’s why the other contestants were happy he made it. He is easy to work with, very laid back and not the “diva” type.

  10. Jason says:

I like the guys voice, but he seems to cocky and arrogant. And if he sings anything pop or near as awful as what he did with Viva La Vida, well then Matt goodbye for good!

  11. Leah says:

He has become more confident through this process (look at the initial audition), per the advice of the judges. Matt as a person is NOT arrogant. He is a very humble and likeable guy. He is also very coachable. Other musicians enjoy working with him because he is not a “diva” type like so many performers can be. He does work hard and strives to become a better musician all the time. Hopefully that will come out through more of the interviews they show.

  12. Rhonda says:

Matt G is just not good enough to be on AI. I listened back to his performances and they are not that great. Plus he comes off as having an attitude.

  13. justme says:

Where is Ricky Braddy when you need him?

  14. Mariooo says:

I couldnt believe some of the comments in this page. “smug”? “having an attitude?” “arrogant?”

Matt isnt all those things you all describe he is. besides, its all about singing. save all of your craps to yourselves.

  15. jism says:

hey Sarah, Rhonda, Jason, instead of worrying about Matt’s attitude, why dont all of you get a life?

  16. bebbysue says:

    Hey Matt,

I hope you end up reading this.

I am in total shock that you were in the Bottom 2 for Motown Week.

You did one heck of a job. And I’m sure it is one of those ‘flukey’ nights when certain factors entered into the equation.

    1) You had to sing 1st on a 2 hour show…..NOT A GOOD POSITION.

    2) Those who saw your great performance were told that you were a frontrunner. That equates “SAFE” to the voters. Therefore…they may elect to vote for another favorite who might be in jeopardy (e.g. Lil Rounds).

    3) You are a PIANO MAN. Stick to what made you what you are. If the judges should ever call your piano a ‘crutch’ as they did to Scott…..SO BE IT.”” After all they don’t vote anymore……American does.

    4) Your best look: The night you did “So Small” and the time you did “Georgia on My Mind” during Hollywood week.

HANG IN THERE MATT……DON’T GET DOWN….. YOU ARE GREAT.
