‘Idolatry’: Can Lil and Danny regain their momentum on ‘Top Downloads’ night?

March 31st, 2009 by Joes Place Leave a reply »

This just in: At the moment I write this sentence, Danny Gokey and Lil Rounds are running fifth and eighth respectively in EW.com’s American Idol Power List reader poll, and that’s something of a shock, considering the strong push from the producers and judges that the pair of early front-runners have received this season. My co-host Annie “Dancing in the Street” Barrett and I offer some Top Dowloads Week advice for Lil and Danny (as well as Kris Allen, Anoop Desai, and Megan Joy Corkrey) in a Very Special Episode of Idolatry that features riveting choreography,  plenty of bleeped profanity, a menacing Japanese robot, and my first (and last) attempt to sex up the show. Press play below and enjoy!

I never understood the Lil hype at all. The Danny hype was justified in a way because back in the earlier rounds, he showed what he got. Getting the final slot to perform during Group 1 is a plus, too. After a boring night, he got to bring everything back up with “Hero”. (not to mention the dead wife helping the hype.)

As for Lil… her “Be Without You” was copycat at best. Everything else that followed… was crap. Even her Motown prerecorded “performance” was not good. The hype started with Kara. Now, Simon’s keeping it alive.

  2. Hmmm says:

My guess is they feared an all-boy final three, hence the Lil pimpery. Now that Allison is coming on strong, I’ll be curious to see if it continues.
Guesses for the pimp spot tonight?

  3. katri says:

I’m not sure if the judges (esp Simon) is buying into Allison. Would they want another 16-year-old Idol? I don’t think so, no matter how different Allison is from Jordin.

The boys are really just STRONGER than the girls this time around.

  4. suebrody says:

Matt DEFINITELY gets the pimp spot tonight, after last week’s debacle. (Megan should have been in the bottom 3, not Matt.)

And I agree; now that Allison is a strong contender, they can stop the ridiculous Lil pimping. I think Megan goes home next week, but you never know, it could be Lil! Stranger things have happened.

I want to know who is voting for Anoop so that he is number 2 in the TVGuide.com poll. Am I missing something? Is he really a frontrunner?

  5. suebrody says:

Sorry, Anoop is number ONE in the TVGuide.com poll. Say what?!

As far as Allison, she is taking off, regardless of the judges’ thoughts about her (maybe viewers are reacting as a result of the judges’ disregard?). OTOH, TPTB did give her the pimp spot, and she did not go bottom 3. But then they played with each others’ face after she sang, which was inexcusable, IMO. Way to disrespect a contestant, Paula, Kara, and Simon.

I am afraid that is Lil ends up in the bottom 3, they will save her, and that means two go home the next week, one of whom may NOT be her.

    —-

    During auditions, he was.

After the VERY safe “Angel of Mine”, he didn’t advance. Then “My Prerogative”… ugh, like a drunk karaoke boyband performance, got into Top 13.

Then “Beat it” came along. Basically, Anoop was only considered a frontrunner during Auditions and Hollywood week.

  7. Joes Place says:

I calling it right here. Matt gets the pimp spot.

  8. could be says:

Could be, but usually the “shocking bottom three” thing is enough to ensure a rally from Matt’s fan base, so maybe they’ll give it to Kris?

  9. Of course.... says:

You probably have information the rest of us don’t! :)

  10. Shannon says:

I don’t think Matt will get the pimp spot this week seeing as how just had it two weeks ago during Grand Ole Opry week. I think it will go to Kris or someone else that hasn’t had it before.

  11. Bill Mitchell says:

    Joe,

Yep, just like Allison got it after her near miss, Matt gets it (and deserves it) tonight. I can’t remember seeing anyone look more bummed than Matt last week being bottom 2.

Normally I would say, “tough luck” but he did not deserve bottom 2.

  12. Bill Mitchell says:

Danny and ‘Lil are getting zero buzz out there. All the talk is Adam and Allison.

  13. Cassidy says:

Matt won’t get pimp spot tonight. He closed the show only two weeks ago. It’ll probably go to Kris. But Matt better be near the end!

And and I have a good feeling about Matt’s performance tonight. I think he’s riding on buzz after last weeks shock. And a great performance tonight will keep him rolling…

  14. suebrody says:

I forgot that Matt closed recently. If he doesn’t get the pimp slot, then Matt is 2nd or 3rd to end and Kris is last, since Kris never got the pimp slot. I bet Adam goes 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. I don’t think it will hurt him, though *fingers crossed*. Might as well put Scott first…*zzzzz* Matt WILL kill it. The big question marks are Anoop (who needs a good week), Danny (bigger week), and Megan (well, maybe not…she still has the VFTW vote). Lil should be near the beginning as well, along with Megan. Anoop has been very disappointing, but I guess he still has a big fan base.

Lil is actually getting negative buzz, Bill, b/c she didn’t kill it last week and she is SO overrated and has been since Day 1. Danny needs a big week or he is in BIG trouble, and will be overtaken by Kris, Anoop, and Matt. (And Danny has GOT to cut out the snarky looks, IMO.)

  15. Luvstoread says:

Was bookaholic.. Like this name so much better.

Anyway barring a total collapse, I think it will be an all male final with Adam getting one of the top two spots. The other will be up for grabs. If Danny (Crokey) Gokey doesn’t mix it up soon, he’ll be out the door. And, can someone please tell him that shouting is not singing!

  16. Michelle says:

did anyone see the cocky look on gokey’s face at the elimination last week..i hope he has to go first! if he could just be humble i might half way like him…so overrated..he really is! who cares if its a 3 boy finale, every year its always been boys and girls..it will be a first, and then next yr they can search for strong girls…lil is going down fast..dont wanna see a beyonce wanna-be or another fantasia…period.

  17. Luvstread says:

Just out of curiosity, how many here are on Easter time zone or have an Eastern time zone feed and can blog live?

  18. Luvstoread says:

I was Bookaholic last week. Like this name so much better.

  19. Luvstoread says:

Michelle – Ruben and Clay battled it out in the finals of season two.

  20. missy says:

I think it’s time for Adam to sing in the first three spots tonight. Probably not by producer’s choice but he’s usually in the last hour every week. At least the show is 1 hr 25 min tonight, less time for people to forget. Although I can’t imagine Adam doing anything forgettable.

  21. suebrody says:

    I can blog live. :)

Gokey is bugging me so much at this point. He is so cocky (from the beginning, to be honest). It was a bit endearing at first; now it’s just irritating. When he found he made Top 10, he gave this “Well, of course” look and sat right now. Feh. And the glasses do nothing for me, honestly. (He has over 20 pairs of them. Yippie.)

The judges said the guys were stronger back at Top 36, remember? They were right. Of course, if they had picked singers like Jesse and Felicia, they might have had a better chance. They thought Jasmine would be the next Jordin Sparks; nope. And Paula is now hedging on Danny for Top 2 and threw Allison into the mix.

    I could totally see a Matt/Adam top 2.

  22. suebrody says:

IMO, Adam could go first (I bet he’s in the first three) and it wouldn’t matter at all. I would like to see Kris and Matt in the final two. I hope they don’t put Lil last… :(

  23. Jim says:

I”m sure the producers wont put Adam untill the middle somewhere. He’s a main factor why people watch.

Danny is so over-rated- no sex appeal whatsoever.

    Kris will get pimp spot.

Scottmegan will follow Adam somewhere after the middle

  24. Satchel says:

BTW- Adam was in the first half an hour #5 for his
    Ring of Fire preformance.

  25. Luvstoread says:

SueBrody.. Me too :-) I just feel sorry for whoever is after Adam. Good point Jim. Most people are looking forward to what he has to bring out for the evening instead of the same old song and dance like the others.

  26. Early night says:

Jim, I’m with you. I always turn it off right after Adam’s performance, and I’m probably not the only one!

As for Gokey, enough already. (I seriously thought his name was Gorky for the first three weeks and thought he should maybe re-think that!) I guess I’m over the “my wife has been dead for four weeks guess I’ll go to the AI tryouts for fun” thing, but the heavy duty Bling for Jesus around his neck Bugs. Big time.

Can’t wait for the rehearsal report!

  27. missy says:

Right, I forgot how early Adam’s ROF performance was. If they are smart they’ll save him until the back half of the show.

  28. Bill Mitchell says:

Well, they could do anything I suppose, but considering Adam is the #1 draw for those that love and hate him alike, it seems silly to shoot your biggest firework at the start of the show – fairness be damned.

I will be surprised to see Adam go anywhere higher than third from the end the rest of the season.

If there is any justice, Scott will go first so we can get rid of him. His singing is lame, that weird grin he has on his face all the time creeps me out and I HATE how he argues with the judges after every performance.

It’s weird that he stays in every week because from everything I read everywhere, NO ONE likes him.

That’s one thing I really like about Adam, he knows enough to keep his mouth shut. I have noticed a couple of times after ROF when Simon was slamming him he started to say something and bit his tongue – smart move. Be above it all.

  29. suebrody says:

Oh, good. Then Adam should be 6 or 7 at the latest. There ARE people who watch to see what Adam will do *raises hand*. I certainly do NOT wait to see what Scott or Lil do. Megan the train wreck is sort of interesting, I have to admit. Not that I want her on much longer.

  30. Bill Mitchell says:

Well, it’s clear that they put Adam’s ROF early because the producers (read, “Simon”) thought it sucked Balls of Fire.

If Adam goes early, it’s a pretty clear bet the Producers don’t like the song.

  31. Yes, but says:

Bill, good point but it wasn’t until after ROF that the Huge Hate him/Love him buzzfest really began. Last week’s ratings spiked, I think, in part because lots of people were tuning in just out of curiosity to see WWAD (What will ADam Do).

And after last week’s big makeover performance I’d be surprised if that WWAD factor has declined much. So if I’m a producer, my boy goes close to last, at least until the buzz dies down.

  32. suebrody says:

    One interesting thing to note:

When Adam first sang Satisfaction and Simon half slammed/half praised him, Adam said, Well, that’s music. Some people love it, some people hate it. Randy said, Well, I loved it, and since then Adam hasn’t said a WORD. It does NOT bode well for anyone to argue with Simon, and yes, I mean you, Danny and Lil.

Same thing happened with Cook last year. He got slammed before Top 10 for arguing with Simon about his performance, and the word nerd thing, WHICH I LIKED IT. In any case, Simon got really pissed off. After that, Cook kept quiet, except during the finale, when he explained why he sang Collective Soul. He wasn’t being arrogant or snarky at that point, he was being honest, and it resonated with the viewers.

Pick the right song, sing well, listen to the judges, and stay safe for another week.

  33. Luvstoread says:

Sue if was an Octopus, I would raise eight for Adam. Oops that’s Octomom… Nope she’s raising 14. Oh well, I’m out to the gym then home for Idol. Will check in tonight live if anyone is going to be here. :-)

  34. Cassidy says:

Hey hey now, ya’ll. Adam ain’t the only exciting thing on this show.

I look forward each week to what a certain “piano man” will bring (and no, I do NOT mean Scott). If it wasn’t for Matt, I wouldn’t be watching this season, that’s for sure. He’s the only performance I really tune in for. I know I’m not alone on this either…and they put him first last week which made the rest of the show a bore for me, (besides Allison at the end…that last note was pretty exciting!)

Anyway, they like to open the show with a BANG and close with a BANG (or a nice, tender ballad), so I wouldn’t be surprised if Adam goes upbeat this week and starts the show off. :)

  35. suebrody says:

Yes, I am a HUGE Matt fan (LOVE his voice and mad piano skills). I am a tiny bit scared of Adam starting show, but I think that whatever he does will not be forgotten. I definitely believe Matt or Kris goes last, but not one after the other, b/c they would want someone very different (like Megan) to go in between. I wonder if Scott would open…I don’t think so, b/c it would be such a boring opening that Idol might lose viewers (totally serious).

Now Megan…she could start (and she never has). OTOH, does it really matter where Scott goes? He seems like the nicest guy, as Michael did, but he just doesn’t have the voice the others do and he does the same thing EVERY WEEK. I would be shocked if he or Megan didn’t go home tomorrow night. But you really do have to vote, b/c you never know…

  36. Joes Place says:

I completely forgot Mtt closed the show 2 weeks ago. Ahhh dang. I was looking forward to him cloging te show. Well. he should be really close to the end

  37. jomarc says:

Hey Matt fans….. You’ve got to vote for Matt alone tonight….and lots of times. Bring our guy back where he belongs. A REAL CONTENDER
