Former ‘Idols’ Sound Off On Judges’ New Veto Power

When Michael Johns was eliminated from last season’s “American Idol” during week five there was a collective gasp of shock. An early favorite (especially among female fans) John’s rendition of “Dream On” by Aerosmith, while not his best performance, certainly didn’t deserve to get him the Idol boot. Johns is just the type of person this new judges’ “save” is hoping to help. When host Ryan Seacrest last week explained the new rule he invoked the names of Johns and other former contestants – Chris Daughtry, Tamyra Gray and Jennifer Hudson who all were suddenly sent home with the lowest number of votes.

So, you would think that Johns would find this new rule to be a fantastic addition. In fact, he finds it just the opposite.

“I personally don’t really dig it that much. As someone that was the shock value and it would have helped I don’t really think its necessary,” he told Accesshollywood.com correspondent Laura “Dish of Salt” Saltman backstage at a taping of Fox Reality Channel’s “American Idol Extra.” Johns continued, “I think that’s the drama of Idol isn’t it? That sometimes America gets it right. Sometimes they get it wrong. You gotta vote for the people you love.” Brooke White, also from season seven, agreed with Johns’ summation. “In some ways things play out for a reason and you just take it for what it is.” Laura also spoke to several season six contestants about the new veto power as the rehearsed for, “American Stars In Concert: Spring Break” Phil Stacey, who was part of a double elimination with Chris Richardson two seasons ago, has his theory on how it will play out this season.

“Basically what they are saying is don’t vote Adam Lambert or Danny Gokey out cause if you do they will get saved. Paula wants to see them in the finale. So they will save them,” Stacey said. “I don’t know that it’s going to change the way America votes or the way the judges vote to be honest. For the most part America agrees with Simon Cowell.”

Gina Glocksen didn’t mince words on her feelings.

“I personally think it’s stupid.”

Of course they don’t care, because they’re seen, get record deals, Idol tour and all that stuff.
But, for the viewers, having to watch Kristy Lee Cook every week instead of Michael Johns sucks.
They’re not seeing it through ‘my eyes’… and ears hahaha

They already know whom they are going to save, should they feel they have to (someone like Lil, Kris, Matt, Allison). Joke, joke, ratings ploy that won’t work, joke.

    And poor Jorge last week:
    Ryan: Will you save Jorge?
    Simon: No, sorry.

Way to ruin a guy’s hopes, Simon.

I hope Michael has a terrific career, despite Idol. Daughtry sure has. Kristy Lee, OTOH, not so much.

kristy left the following week after michael johns Vivi. I think the twist is stupid as well.

I used Kristy as an example, didn’t even remember :)
So let me use a better example… instead of Michael I get to hear Jason Castro (really fun and nice guy, but MJ’s vocals are better) and Syesha (good girl, I’d fall asleep everytime :P )
    Top 3 should’ve been David’s and MJ :)

I really just don’t see a point in the veto…it was even uncomfortable for me last week watching Jasmine and Jorge sing again, and then stand in front of the judges for yet another rejection, since everyone knew the veto would not be used on either one of them…I think it is pointless… I think it is just putting off the obvious..and it is wasting even more time!
I would have hated for this veto to be used last year. As much as I really liked most of the contestants , I absolutely loved Jason and Brook and I am pretty sure they would not have been around quite as long if the judges could have manipulated it even more. I don’t know…I just feel like they are changing one thing after the other this year, to where I don’t even recognize the show anymore…
= ( And it’s so freakin’ predictible this year! Ugghhh…I’m done “venting” LOL

Kristy would not have left that week anyway even if they had the rule last year and used it on MJ. I agree that its stupid b/c they wont use on someone who should be saved like Phil said they will save it to use on Adam or Danny if anything goes wrong.

I think that maybe by Voting michael johns off, america did get it right, cause how popular is he now? not very..but also in season 5 they said the week before chis left the 2 top voted were Katharine mcphee and daughtry, as soon as i heard that I was ecstatic cause they were my 2 favorite but i quit voting cause i realized, they are everyones favorite so why vote, so i think telling whose in the top 2 or 3 could hurt them because ppl wont support them if they re not in fear of going home you know..and judges pick favs ealry on so i think everyone will know right when the judges will use it. It wont be a surprise.
