Oh My Ever Lovin’ God.  That was BY FAR the greatest moment on American Idol.  How funny.  I will watch over and over.  I hope he gets into the top 10.  Imagine a tour with Nick Mitchell.  Serves AI right for putting him in the Semi’s just for fun. VFTW Picked him when the song was half over.

Did you hear him give a Shout Out to Doogie?  NPH?  Here’s the photo:

Here’s what E Online had to say about Nick

“Nick Mitchell’s Top 36 Inclusion Explained: In terms of total viewers, last night’s American Idol peaked in the 8:30 p.m. half-hour, scoring 25.1 million for Mitchell’s Norman Gentle aerobics, preliminary Nielsen estimates showed.”

Huh…Ratings were the highest to watch Nick.  Very cool!

The brilliant writer at MTV.com had to say this:

Why Normund Gentle Is The Greatest ‘American Idol’ Contestant Ever

But can the polarizing singer/comedian make it to the top 12?

A few weeks ago, after Normund Gentle (or, if you prefer, Nick Mitchell) inexplicably slipped into the “American Idol” top 36, we published a piece in which we called him “either the most annoying contestant in the show’s illustrious eight-year history, or the most brilliant.” At the time, we weren’t really sure which was appropriate.

Now, after Wednesday night’s vampy, campy performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” we’ve made up our minds: Gentle is the greatest contestant in “American Idol” history.

Here’s why: For starters, he’s infinitely more interesting than anyone else in the “Idol” annals, despite the fact that he isn’t even real — or, more specifically, because he isn’t real. In Normund Gentle (who has been identified on the show as “Norman Gentle” but, according to his Web site, is actually “Normund”), Mitchell has created a cabaret caricature that pokes fun at everything the show is about: the over-the-top emoting, the cheesy numbers, the fact that this is basically a beauty contest.

Gentle is definitely not beautiful: He’s gawky, his short shorts ride uncomfortably high, he wears a headband, and yet, he survives. He is cheesiness personified, his performances so overly emotional that they border on being terrible (like, during last night’s performance, when he literally got on his knees and begged the audience — and the judges — to let him stay on the show). He is, if one is being generous, an incredible slab of performance art … either you get him or you don’t. He is multifaceted. Complex.

Having said all that, you cannot merely write Gentle off as a “joke,” despite all evidence to the contrary. This is because Gentle — or Mitchell — can actually sing. For proof of this, check out his version of “Amazing Grace” during the “Idol” auditions, or the extended, lung-sapping “Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!” he capped his performance with last night. Sure, he did this after chucking his glasses into the audience, pawing at the “American Idol” sign and wading into the studio audience like a lost puppy, but still, you cannot deny that he has pipes (and at least he doesn’t use them to shatter eardrums like theater-trained emo kid Adam Lambert). He is not merely a one-trick pony.

Finally, as if everything he’s done up to this point is not proof enough, Wednesday night’s performance only proved that Gentle (and, by default, Mitchell) has absolutely no pretenses about actually winning “Idol.” In fact, he seems hell-bent on single-handedly destroying it. His routine brought last night’s show to a screeching halt, it left the judges agape, and it had the audience in complete hysterics. It’s as if, in one moment, everyone watching, judging or producing “Idol” realized, “Wow, this thing really is ridiculous.” He blew holes through the show’s entire premise. As opposed to going out there and singing for his very life (which everyone else did, with underwhelming results), Gentle took the stage in a white tuxedo jacket and decided to screw around. It was either the work of a madman, a mastermind or both.

I so totally agree!

OMG – Nick is SO totally funny! Phooey on you Jason! Normund rocked! I’d pay good money to go see a Comedy show featuring him.

Hmmm … perhaps Last Comic Standing should come back on air with Nick as one of the contestants?

Megan was terrible and Kris was just ahh forgettable….

Personally, the only performance I really liked from the past two shows was Ricky Braddy’s. It was just a pure vocal performance for me … no affectations. Danny Gokey’s, Alexis’, Adam’s, Allison’s, etc. were all just gimmicky for me, too affected. I should say though that Nick was truly entertaining … and he seems to be a very nice person, too.

Nick/Norman was funny but he couldn’t choose another song? Anyways, I’m glad he got some exposure but I hope he does not make it!

Yay! I’m not going to get to vote this year, but I’m so happy he’s getting the love. I really want to see the look on Simon’s face if he makes it. Hee

Sorry but this guy CAN sing. When he’s being serious you can hear the real talent in there. I’m frustrated and thoroughly entertained by the shtick. I would love to hear him sing straight without the gimmick just one night so I hope he makes it through. Imagine Idol Tour with Normund. LOL

As far as singing last night, Nick was not good. What he does have is entertainment value. Look, if you read his bio or what his resume is up to this point, you will see that it is very heavily influenced by comedy. He made it to Hollywood as Normund and into the top 36 as Normund.

For all those who knock his performance, he was put through as this character. For him to now change into something more serious would be “out of character” for him. Nick probably knows that his chances of going on would be slim. I would have done the exact same thing.

If I were put through as a comedy act, then I’m going to do comedy and I will go out doing what is true to my character. You may not like it, but he’s is being honest with who he was in this competition.

Will he make it, most likely not, but he put on a terrific and entertaining act that I’m sure Idol won’t soon forget.

Good job Nick! I loved it!

Nick/Normund is by far the most entertaining contestant ever on Idol. He brings way more to the table than just singing karaoke, and is a natural performer. I think he has a future in Broadway, ala Nathan Lane. He is the only contestant keeping me watching this season, as the rest are the same flavor that we see every season.

Nick is 100 percent better than Sanjaya was. The problem is that with this stupid wild card system, he could potentially take away a slot from someone like Ricky Braddy, who was, IMO, the best singer of the past two weeks and isn’t even in the Top 12 (ridiculous). I kind of wanted to see Nick actually sing, but I found him pretty funny on a very dull night. Had it not been for Adam, I’m not sure I would have cared who moved on at all. Too bad he was at the end; otherwise, I would have DVR’ed through everyone else’s performances.

I pray Nick makes it into the top 12. This show needs him to make it interesting again!

  19. Maureen wrote on 26. Feb 2009

He is the Most Entertaining Person I have seen in a long time. I agree with alot of people who commented that he is not a Pop or Rock idol but a comedy “idol” he is. I laughed so hard last night. And his imitation of the Fantasia pose during hollywood week was great. He knows what he’s doing. And boo to Simon.

The best thing is going to be when he comes back for a performance during the finale and he sings that song again..this time with a HUGE thing on stage with backup singers, fireworks, confetti, etc. I can’t wait!! BRING NORMUND BACK!!!

  21. Calvin wrote on 28. Feb 2009

Nick does have a good voice, but he choose to entertain. And frankly, imagine group 2 without Nick. That’s sounds damn boring already.

  22. Calvin wrote on 28. Feb 2009

Correction: That sounds damn boring already.
